(Note: The game comes with low quality, low size sound effects (11kHz), but you can download better quality sound files from the Icy Tower homepage (22 or 44kHz). Keep on running fast, jumping high, and comboing and the impressive sound effects intone "Good" or "Sweet". Make another multiple jump in the time, though, and you get a combo score. If you wait too long and the meter runs out, or you fall back down a stage, or just make a simple one-up jump, it's gone. Jump up multiple platforms and you start off the combo metre. Make him fall below the screen, and he be dead. Run him up to a good speed and he can jump higher. Every time he jumps up to the next platform, he gets a measly ten points. To quote the readme.txt, "Ey, dis seems like a cool place to hang out in." And indeed Icy Tower is. And they ain't no sissy aerobic hops, neither, he's goin' all the way with his spinning, sparkling leaps, even going "Wooooo!" a lot. He finds a really, really (infinitely, in fact: doesn't the mind boggle?) tall tower with regularly spaced platforms and, instead of assuming ownership and getting rubes to pay to see this marvel of architecture, he decides jumps up it to impress some nondescript 'hood dudes. Icy Tower is a great way to kill some time, but whether the game lasts long will depend on the type of player you are.Hope you're hungry, 'cos this is one tasty free lunch. You could work towards earning the next ranking by achieving whatever objectives you need. You might want to keep going for a new high score, or to reach a new floor. On the other hand, the profile and ranks do give you something to work toward and a reason to replay. It can get a bit boring after playing for a while. In both modes you are constantly jumping from platform to platform until the game ends. These sounds can quickly become annoying, but can be disabled if you choose.Īnother issue with the game is the repetitive nature of the gameplay. The only negative aspect may be the sound effects played when jumping. There is also a decent (although limited) soundtrack that complements the gameplay well. The presentation in Icy Tower is positive overall, with clean and colorful graphics that look very good, especially compared to similar games. Additionally, you have the option to customize the controls and change them to something more comfortable for you. The controls and combos are clearly outlined in the instructions of the game. The arrow keys can move you left or right while the space bar makes you jump. You'll only need to learn a few keys to start playing the game. One positive aspect of the game is the relatively simple controls. While it's not a huge issue or setback, it would have been a nice addition to have some difficulty choices (like easy, medium, hard, etc.). You can play the Custom Mode and adjust some settings, but some can't be made easier (like scrolling speed) and nothing you in this mode counts towards your profile or rank. There's no way to make the game any easier or more difficult. One downside is the lack of options to adjust the difficulty settings. You can change the scrolling speed of the screen, platform size, and the strength of gravity to create an extremely easy or incredibly challenging platform jumping experience.

This mode also has a profile for your character that tracks things like largest jumps or combos, and has a rank for you based on your accomplishments. The Classic Mode is the normal gameplay that has you jumping from platform to platform as the screen scrolls faster and faster. While Icy Tower does not provide different levels or towers to play, it does offer two modes. It's a great way to increase your score dramatically and quickly move up the tower. Combos can be “chained” in one bigger combo if you keep making large jumps in quick succession. A combo is a jump from one platform to another platform at least two floors above. Combos are performed by building up your characters speed (by running fast enough, bouncing off walls, falling, etc.) and jumping. To help you move up the tower faster and earn more points there are “combos”.
